When Rob Petersen was a four-year-old child growing up 100m from the Dutch racing circuit of Zandvoort, the sound of the racing cars drew his attention and sparked what would become a lifelong fascination with motor racing.
He began working as a flag marshal for Zandvoort in 1975 and joined the Racing Organisation five years later, eventually progressing to become the Track Speaker in 1985- A job that didn’t end until 2019. He also worked for Eurosport as a commentator between the years 1993 and 2005. Now having since retired, he works as the Archivist for the Zandvoort racetrack.
Petersen claimed that the history of the Zandvoort circuit was his “True Passion”, something which can be clearly seen in the quantity and quality of his BRM collection which spans back from 1958 until 1975 when the team ceased racing. His expertise also helped identify the circuit in other images in the wider BRM Recollect collection: in some cases, not only identifying that Zandvoort was the circuit in question but also which specific part of the track it was.
The Petersen Archive will contain images over 300 images from all aspects of the races from the mechanics and drivers preparing the cars to action shots mid-race and will be available to subscribed members of the BRM Recollect in the future alongside more exclusive content from people involved with BRM throughout their history. For now, please enjoy this brief preview of some of the images from the collection and a sneak peek at the Recollect archive as seen at the Classic Motor Show 2023 and as part of the BRM Exhibition ‘The Team That Beat The World’ hosted at Silverstone Museum last year.
