After scanning glass plate negatives the material can be converted into digital formats such as RAW, JPEG, JPEG2000, TIFF, BMP and Adobe PDF and can be produced in full colour or greyscale. Indexing, Metadata tagging, OCR and all forms of image processing can be offered as with all our digitisation services.
Thanks to our experience in the digitisation and scanning of fragile heritage materials, we are able to offer a service for scanning glass plate negatives and lantern slides up to A3 in size.
As standard when scanning glass plate negatives, we will convert the negative images to positives and perform contrast adjustments in order to ensure that you receive the clearest possible digital images.

Scanning Glass Plate Negatives
Glass plate negatives have a light sensitive emulsion with a binder thinly layered on one side of a glass plate. These emulsions are very fragile and need to be handled with great care. Our studio, based in the midlands has been specifically designed for scanning glass plate negatives. Our staff are fully trained and accredited in the handling of delicate and valuable items. With a ‘white glove’ approach and the use of specialist conservation tools, images contained on your glass plate negatives will be digitally removed of dust, speckles and most other marks. Staff will carefully remove them from card sleeves during the digitisation process and carefully replace them in the packaging when the scanning has been completed.
Scanning Glass Plate Negatives Outsource or On-Site?
Our digitisation centre provides a hassle-free option for outsourced scanning glass plate negatives but we also know that for certain projects onsite scanning is more appropriate. For example, due to reasons of confidentiality, security or nature of the material. We provide the option of an on-site service team for these requirements. We will arrange for you to be visited by a digitisation specialist who can discuss your aims and objectives. They will review your current collections and help you set out a plan to turn your originals into a digital library, using the most suitable digital capture techniques.
