On 13th December 2021 GENUS released a news item reporting that GENUS had been appointed the UK & Ireland distributor of Mekel Technology products from The Crowley Company for the UK & Ireland. https://www.genusit.com/the-crowley-company-taps-genus-to-represent-mekel-technology-scanners-in-uk/ The product range includes one production microfiche scanner, the MACH7, and 3 production roll film scanners the MACHMini, MACH5 and MACH10.
Since the announcement GENUS has had considerable success in marketing and selling these products in what many perceive as a declining marketplace. Far from declining, the microfilm digitisation business is going from strength to strength, now that Mekel Technology speed and technological advances have made the process so much simpler and cost effective. Genus has installed 16 production roll film scanners, 5 x MACH7 production microfiche scanners with an additional 3 x MACH7’s awaiting sign off – all in the last 4 months. The MACH-Series production scanners are recognised throughout the industry for their automation, reliability, speed and ease-of-use. Using a CCD camera, lens and smooth light fibre optic lighting, the MACH-Series expertly converts all microfilm format to a digital file. Both bitonal and grayscale images can be captured simultaneously without impacting speed.
The QuantumScan intuitive capture software works, in tandem with Mekel Technology’s and the MACH-Series microfiche and microfilm scanners, to provide reliable, accurate capture of full-fiche, aperture card or full-roll microfilm ribbons in exceptional resolution and at unbeatable speeds.
To compliment the Mekel Technology scanners GENUS also offer IMAGEHost, a server-based repository that allows for microfiche and films to me saved as virtual media and then accessed via networks. Built-in tools allow for image enhancement and redaction. Key for roll film users is the benefit of having digital microfilm without the need to spend small fortunes on indexing every individual image.
Whilst very little microfilm is being created in the UK today, there are still millions of microfiche, rolls of film and aperture cards still in daily use in the UK. The demand to digitise has never been higher as organisations look at being able to access microfilm images quickly, accurately and remotely. Both service bureaus and end users are now benefitting from the quality and speed of the Mekel Technology MACH scanners.
